  • John first started ceramics at the age of ten. His first teacher was in her 80's and so willing to teach him. She broke her own rule of no one under 18 in her classes. He would walk by her shop on his way to the U-Tote-Um store. It was his daily walk for fire ball candy's. Back than a kid could walk to a store a lone. Every trip he would stop at her shop window staring at all the wonderful pieces. He would wonder how she made them. One day she came out and asked he wanted to know how to make one. Of course he was excited and said yes with a smile. Miss Sarah, as she was called, took John by the hand and sat him at a table. The adult patrons protested and Miss Sarah asked them to hush. She asked for John's telephone number and called telling his Mom where he was and that she'd call when he was done. She than let John pick any piece of greenware off the shelf that was a dollar or less. John picked a small pitcher. She asked why and John said to give to his Mom. That started John's life long interest in Ceramics, clay and glazes. He broke that piece so many times that day it became a vase. Still he never gave up or got frustrated. Miss Sarah asked him back. That started John Huckleberry's education in clay.
